Homage to a Hollywood classic
Nothing excites me more than the glamour of old Hollywood – the stars, the movies and the great designers who worked for the old Hollywood Studios like MGM and 20th Century Fox and one of the greatest designers who dressed the biggest stars (including Grace Kelly) back then was Edith Head.
So you can imagine my excitement when Joanna came on her Saturday morning appointment bringing one image of Grace Kelly wearing that iconic white Chiffon dress in the movie “To catch a Thief”.
I really wanted to make this dress for Joanna but this was going to be a homage, and an interpretation of the original dress:
- As it was a wedding dress it had to meet a few requirements, like a lovely train at the back of her dress.
- The neck line not to sit as low as the original dress.
- Cut the side seams of the bodice a little longer to sit lower than the original to suite Joanna figure better.
I knew why Joanna loved this dress (as well as the movie) – she knew this style of dress would work for her figure. Great neck and shoulder line, lovely bust line and small through the rib cage and the waist paired off with fantastic dark blue shoes and a beautiful vintage necklace – she had the Hollywood look.
We saw Joanna once a month as she lived and worked in Belgium. It was a pleasure to make her wedding dress and she was fun to work with.
